CUBE DIAL

CUBE DIAL

GRADE II ❖ Dedication unknown. C12 origins; C15 W tower; rebuilt 1830s. Large cube sundial over porch. For scratch dial on SE buttress of the nave, see separate entry HERE. 6m SW of Wimborne. 6m SW of Wimborne. 50.7374 / 50.7374 / SY960930

This intriguing slate dial is located on the apex of the S porch. The photos were taken in poor light and do not do it justice.

One significant feature is that one face of the dial has Roman numerals, cut with apparent accuracy. The other face has Arabic numerals, notable for the casual way they are inscribed. Presumably all sides were completed at the same time but – for a dial this size and weight – probably by different people. Maybe an apprentice was involved.

These 2 images show dial-faces – including the back one – against the sky.
