SCAPHE DIAL . MUSEO GALILEO . FLORENCE

A wonderful Italian C17 brass scaphe dial in arguably the most fascinating non-art museum in Florence. It is in near-perfect condition. Part of the Medici collection.

The brass hemispherical dial is inscribed with hour lines, with the gnomon penetrating the bowl at an angle. The cup has three parallel slits representing the main parallel circles of the celestial sphere (the equator and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn). The long vertical rod is for suspending or safely securing the dial as required.
