LYTCHETT MINSTER . DORSET

SCRATCH DIAL

GRADE II ❖ Dedication unknown. C12 origins; C15 W tower; rebuilt 1830s. Large Cube Dial over the porch has separate entry HERE. A late dial stone incorporated into a much later rebuild. 6m SW of Wimborne. 50.7374 / 50.7374 / SY960930

Located on SE buttress of the nave, an historical leftover from the church restoration in 1833. Thankfully this small corner of dark stone was reused, sparing the lower half of a late dial. GLP noted ’11 lines terminating in a roman numeral’ and that the dial is very accurately cut: ‘none of the lines being more than 3″ away from the theoretical ideal’. The gnomon would have been in the mortar line.

TESS OF THE VALE

I am including this excellent recent photograph by the eponymous ‘Tess of the Vale’ because it shows the depths of the radials very clearly: tessofthevale

GSS Category: Scratch Dial; Mass Dial; Dial Stone use in rebuild

All photos: Keith Salvesen except the last, Tess of the Vale
