TRELISSICK GARDENS . CORNWALL – CORNUBIAE HORTOS AMABANT

A modern dial in the walled garden at Trelissick NT, with a rather charming motto for the couple commemorated ‘Spouses (who) loved gardens’. It may be unique: I have found no other example, and it does not appear in Margaret Gatty’s compendious collection of Cornish sundial mottos.

  1. Was sorry to see that this sundial at Trelissick has lost its gnomon especially as it was such an attractive one as shown in your superb photos when I visited the garden last week (23 Aug 2023). Hopefully it is not lost but awaiting refitting at some time. Explaining the working of the dial to an 11 year old would probably have been much easier with the gnomon intact!

    1. Thanks for getting in touch, Graham. I’m sad to hear about the gnomon loss. Gnomon damage / removal has become a bit of a thing, regrettably. A secluded country church near us in Dorset has recently had an interesting and rather poignant memorial sundial vandalised. The gnomon is gone, and they took the trouble to hit the edges with a hammer. Luckily I had ‘before’ photos for the record.
As for explaining the working, I use a biro or bit of straight stick to give an approximation.
